A LoRa gateway that supports LoRaWAN on the 868MHz channel is required to connect the BEEP base to The Things Network (TTN).

The current version of BEEP base ships with a LoRa-radio chip (RFM96) which can only connect on the 868MHz frequency band that is used in Europe: different frequency bands are used in regions outside of Europe and the BEEP base will not be able to connect to The Things Network in those regions. 

The two requirements for a LoRa gateway are: 

1. An internet connection to connect the gateway to The Things Network
2. A 868MHz radio
   

When choosing a LoRa gateway, please consider the following:

• What kind of internet connection is available?

  • Wired (ethernet)
    

  • WiFi

  • 3/4G

• What kind of power supply do I have?    

  • 220v

  • Solar panels and/or battery

• Where will I place the gateway?

  • Inside

  • Outside (the gateway needs to have at least an IP44 waterproof rating)

• What range do I need to cover?

  • Inside gateways have less range and coverage than outside gateways.

The Things Network has published a list with available gateways that work on their network. From this list we have made a shortlist for you to compare. These are not the only options, and they are not ranged from best to worst, since it depends on your situation which is the most suitable option.
