Any LoraWAN gateway connected to The Things Network must be upgraded to v3 before the 1st of December 2021 to continue functioning. This means that if you have not upgraded your gateway by the 1st of December, you will no longer be able to use gateway to connect your Beep base to The Things Network!

This article lists several commonly used gateways and how to upgrade them to TTN v3. Is your gateway not listed? Consult the The Things website or the website of the gateway manufacturer, or contact us

- TTIG (The Things Indoor Gateway)

If you are using the gateway pictured above (The Things Indoor Gateway), it can be upgraded to v3 by following the instructions for "Claiming the gateway" on the TTN website: https://www.thethingsindustries.com/docs/gateways/thethingsindoorgateway/

- TTKG (The Things Kickstarter Gateway)

If you have an older model TTN Gateway (also known as TTKG, sold in the initial Kickstarter campaign), pictured above, it can be upgraded to TTN v3 by the following procedure:

  • Create a gateway in TTNv3 console with a Gateway ID that is longer than 4 characters but no longer than 8 characters.
  • Create an API key for this gateway with the "Link as Gateway to a Gateway Server for traffic exchange, i.e. write uplink and read downlink" right granted.
  • Remove the gateway's front panel cover and press & hold the pink button for 5 seconds while the gateway is switched on.
  • The gateway will now create a wifi access point with a name starting with "Things-gateway", connect to this access point using the password "thethings"
  • Go to http://192.168.84.1/ and in the first field you enter the Gateway ID. If using a custom The Things Stack, you need to suffix your tenant ID to the Gateway ID: "[gatewayID]@[tenantID]"
  • Now choose wifi network that your gateway will connect to and enter its corresponding passphrase.
  • Click on "Show advanced settings". If using the default TTN stack, enter "https://eu1.cloud.thethings.industries/" and if using a custom The Things Cloud stack, prefix this address with your tenant ID: "https://[tenantID].eu1.cloud.thethings.industries/".
  • Enter the gateway API key (including the "NNSXS." prefix) and click on "Activate".
  • Your gateway will now connect to the specified wifi network and activate itself on TTN v3. Monitor the TTNv3 console to see the gateway connect (this can take a few minutes).
  • If the gateway fails to show up as connected in the console, check the status LEDs on the front panel:
    • Is the first LED on and the second LED is blinking? This indicates that the gateway cannot connect to a wifi network. Press & hold the pink button again and make sure you enter the correct wifi network credentials.
    • Are the first and the second LEDs on and is the third LED blinking? This indicates a problem with the TTN activation procedure. Press & hold the pink button again and re-enter your gateway ID (including "@tenantID") and make sure your account server and API key are correct.
